Fall is one of our favorite times of year here at the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort. The crisp air, golden leaves, and fun local traditions make it a perfect season to celebrate community and creativity. One of the most spirited events in the region is the annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races in Manitou Springs, and this year, we were thrilled to take part once again.

The Buffalo Lodge rolled into the 31st Annual Coffin Races as “Greased Lightning,” bringing plenty of energy and laughter to one of Manitou’s most beloved traditions. If you haven’t experienced it before, the Coffin Races celebrate the legend of Emma Crawford, a young woman whose coffin was famously washed down Red Mountain in the early 1900s. Every October, teams from across the region race creatively decorated coffins up Manitou Avenue while thousands of spectators cheer them on. It’s a true celebration of local spirit, creativity, and community fun.

Our “Greased Lightning” coffin got a fresh new paint job this year, thanks to the talented work of our in-house artist, John D’Angelo. Our runners, Mike and Bob from the Buffalo Lodge Bike Tribe, Oliver from our front desk, and Dominique, a friend of Torie’s, powered our speedy ride down the street, while our very own Assistant Manager, Noelle Paiement, shined as our Emma (aka Sandra Dee).

Leading the way in the parade were Anne and Erica, friends of Torie’s visiting from Iowa. This marks the third year in a row that friends from Iowa have joined us to lead the parade, and we’re so grateful for their continued tradition of support and friendship.

“The Coffin Races are such a fun way to celebrate creativity and community spirit,” says Torie Giffin, owner of Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort. “We love seeing our team come together every year to make it happen.”
Events like this remind us why we love being part of the Pikes Peak region. It’s all about celebrating local legends, coming together as a community, and having a great time.
You can watch the entire Parade and Coffin Races 2025 Emma Crawford Coffin Races LIVE In Manitou Springs! You’ll spot the Buffalo Lodge in the parade at the 2:09 mark and see us racing at 2:22.
For more about the event, check out the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce website for photos, history, and event updates.
As the season continues, we look forward to even more fall festivities and cozy gatherings at the Lodge, from potlucks and live music to holiday markets and our year round community rides. There’s always something happening at the Buffalo Lodge Bicycle Resort, and we’re grateful to celebrate it all with our amazing community of friends, riders, and adventurers!
